The Amphibian Survival Alliance will bring together existing projects and organisations, improving co-ordination, scientific research and fund-raising. About a third of amphibian species are threatened with extinctions. A two-day summit held last week in London identified the two main threats as destruction of habitat and the fungal disease(真菌病) chytridiomycosis. "The world's amphibians(两栖类) are facing an uphill battle(艰难的斗争) for survival," said James Collins, co-chair of the Amphibian Specialist Group (ASG) co-ordinated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). "By far the worst threats are infectious disease and habitat destruction, so the Alliance will focus on these issues first." Last week's meeting, held at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), declared that research into possible treatments for the chytrid(壶菌) fungus should be a top priority. How it originated and how it kills are matters of ongoing research. But in practical terms, finding something that can stop it in open country rather than the laboratory is the big challenge. Researchers have found that some amphibian species carry chemicals on their skin that provide a natural defence. The idea is to see whether these chemicals can be turned into something that can attack the fungus in the wild, providing a defence for species that currently have none. More difficult to tackle(处理,抓住) will be the ongoing destruction of habitat that is a concern in most continents, but especially in parts of Asia that are seeing rapid expansion of cities, industry and infrastructure. "If we want to stop the amphibian extinction crisis, we have to protect the areas where amphibians are threatened by habitat destruction," said Claude Gascon, the Amphibian Specialist Group's other co-chair. As a group, amphibians are considerably more threatened than birds, mammals, fish or reptiles(爬行动物). Apart from habitat loss and chytrid, issues of concern are: The formation of the ASA was proposed in 2006 but adequate financial and institutional backing did not materialise. At that stage scientists were divided over how money and resources should be split between conservation in the wild and captive breeding. Initial backing emerged at the ZSL meeting in the form of a $200,000 pledge that will fund the ASA co-ordinator's post for two years.

My friend Peggy and I had both been to Paris before, but always as chaperones for youth groups or part of adult groups, seeing all the usual tourist sites and hearing the same tour guide recitations. This would be the first time on our own -- without responsibilities and free to go anywhere and try anything. On previous trips we had seen all the famous monuments and "tourist sights." The guidebooks claimed that locals were rude and indifferent to visitors but there had to be more to the people of Paris than that. This time we wanted to find the real Parisians. We spent some time exploring small shops and lesser-known museums and churches. We walked along canals and down narrow lanes, seeing a different Paris, but still not making any real contact with the people of this magnificent city. One evening, with the help of the night clerk at our quaint hotel, we found a tiny cafe known only to locals. Nestled inside a dark passage, its unlit sign read, "Chez Maurice." We peeked in the small window on the door to see a small room with half a dozen tables, each with enough chairs for eight patrons. We opened the heavy door and went inside. We were greeted by a burly proprietor, whose smile faded when he discovered we were foreigners with a limited command of the French language. He turned his back and retreated to the kitchen, muttering under his breath and slowly shaking his head from side to side. Not a good start. A moment passed and a young woman led us to our seats at the other end of a table already occupied by an elderly couple. She gave us two menus. For a few minutes we struggled to recall a few French words, but discovered that the descriptions of each dish were too much for us. Our table mates noticed our dilemma. The old man leaned over and began explaining each dish, one at a time. Since he spoke very little English, his translations took the form of elaborate gestures and animal sounds. A fish entree was depicted as a fish swimming upstream, jumping and splashing in the water. For the beef dish, he pretended that his hands were horns on the side of his head, accompanied by a 'mooing' sound. When the young waitress returned, we placed our order and our new 'friends' gave her explicit instructions on how to prepare the food and what side dishes we should have. Despite our limited ability to speak the other's language, we continued our lively conversation throughout the meal. We discovered that they were in their seventies and had been sweethearts for about ten years. She lived nearby in Paris, while he lived in the country. They met here once a week to share a pleasant dinner. Frankly, I have no idea how we understood each other, but we talked about the beauty of Paris, our lives and families, and of course, our other travels.
We had found our Paris.

Mages rock! I’ve been saying this ever since I started playing one in 2005 and stuck to it ever since. Some of you may agree and others may not. But whatever you might think about mages, I’m sure a lot of wedding dresses wow power leveling wow gold aion gold wow power leveling wedding dresses you will agree that the Wrath of the Lich King expansion gives mages some pretty special treatment. This treatment is the reason why I say that it’s a great expansion to be a mage. I noticed a few things so far that make xcmjckiaoaoaps mages feel quite special. The most obvious is the neutral city of Dalaran which is where some of the greatest mages around like Jaina Proudmoore went to study wow power leveling magic. It feels quite awesome as a mage that the “guards” you talk to to ask for directions are fellow mages, the citizens of the magical city. This association with Dalaran makes it great to be a mage. First of all, while others have to wait until level 74 to enter the magical city using the regular way (which I still currently am not familiar with since I just port in or use the flight path), mages get a quest at level 71 to wow gold learn to teleport there. Another benefit of being a mage is that you start out Friendly with the Kirin’tor, which is the faction of mages in Dalaran led by Rhonin. While others have to grind out some rep, mages can purchase the Kirin’tor tabard the moment they get there. aion gold Another thing I was surprised with is the fact that the Mage is the only class in the whole game that has a trainer in Dalaran. It makes sense since it’s where people study to learn magic but that really makes things more convenient while leveling. While other classes will have to go back to their trainers in Azeroth, mages can stay in Northrend even to train. Perhaps another cool thing about being a mage in rolex Replica the expansion is the fact that at level 75, they get their new conjured refreshment - something makes things even more convenient for them. Basically it’s an item like the manna biscuits from the Ritual of Refreshment, a combined food and water item. Sucks though that we only get the new rank of Ritual of refreshment at level 80 still. wow power leveling For these reasons, my mage feels quite special this expansion so it’s a great time to be a mage 0602 LJ! |
